Taking Care of the Trash

Featured Project

Overview

In this gamified training, residents earn their Waste Ace Certificate by passing four challenges presented by members of their communities.

The Problem

The City faced significant challenges with waste management, as residents were struggling with several key issues: improper recycling practices leading to contamination, overfilled trash carts, incorrect placement of carts on trash day, and improper disposal of hazardous or non-recyclable items. These problems not only led to increased operational costs for the City but also had environmental impacts, such as increased landfill waste and recycling loads being rejected due to contamination.

The City needed an effective way to capture residents' attention and encourage them to adopt better waste management practices.

The Solution: Game-Based Learning

The game was structured around four key modules, each corresponding to the main issues the City wanted to address. During each module, a neighbor asks for help from the learner and they have to help in various ways, such as sorting trash and recycling into proper bins, telling neighbors what to do with non-trash items, and placing trash collection steps in the correct order.

Results

The City observed a reduction in recycling contamination and improper trash cart placement. The training became a model for other municipalities, showcasing the potential of gamification in civic education. The City won several awards for this training program including the STAR Outstanding Public Outreach & Environmental Education Award.
